about

Chuck Colson was inspired to write this hymn/song when he was working on a sermon about the Prodigal Son. We entered it into a Gospel Coalition Contest, and allowed that contest deadline to get us in gear to finishing the work. I slaved over the tune and there was one point where it was working itself out in my head for so long I felt sick. But finally it surfaced, and Chuck said "boom" (indicating we nailed it), as he usually would. This was always a joyous ending to a service.

We recorded this in Wendell's DC apartment, parts staggering in piece by piece. Strings played together. Vocals came last, as finally I went into Asparagus Media Studios and finished it with WK.

lyrics

1. Robes and Rings, I Do Not Deserve
Text: Chuck Colson; Tune & Arrangement: Rachel Wilhelm

Robes and rings, I do not deserve, but still you clothe your son.
Grace relieves my debts and my fears, forgetting what was done.

chorus:
Forsaking all, You run to us and receive our shame;
“The dead’s alive! the lost is found!” Jesus Christ proclaims, Jesus Christ proclaims.

You seek to share all you possess with a son not a slave
Mercy refuses my last hope to serve you and repay.

Angels join in rapturous song, while some sneer at the sight,
Of sinners coming to the feast, sharing joy and delight.
