This is the first hymn that I retuned. I loved the words but I changed a few to make them less archaic. I added the refrain. And I love 6/8.
When we recorded this in Wendell's DC apartment, we had only the guitar track. If I remember correctly, we recorded all the rest live, except the piano and backing vocals. That means we had the percussion, strings, and vocals all in one take. It's not perfect, but I love that memory. It is very much how we sounded on Sunday evenings, so why not keep it?
Text: Joseph Carlyle, 1802 & Rachel Wilhelm, 2011.
Tune & Arrangement: Rachel Wilhelm
Lord when we bend before thy throne and our confessions pour,
Teach us to feel the sins we own and hate what we deplore
Refrain: Have mercy (4X)
Our broken spirits, pitying see, true penitence impart;
And let a kindling glance from thee light hope within the heart.
When we disclose our wants in prayer, may we our wills resign;
And not a thought our hearts will share that is not wholly thine.
