about

This song surprised me when it came out of my mouth and onto a page during the pandemic of 2020. When I shared it with an online songwriting group, they said it had a modern yet ancient sound they couldn't quite explain. I filed it away and forgot about it. Fast forward to production of this record, I wanted a final song that left us with Jeremiah speaking to God about what is next. We know that Lamentations is next, and it is a very hard road. Devin wrote me and told me we needed a song about God being a refuge. I forget what chapter in Jeremiah he cited but it is in there somewhere. Just before he wrote me, I swear God airdropped this song randomly, it seemed, in my mind, and I found it as a rough recording on a voice memo. God definitely knew about this before I did!

lyrics

Refuge of the weary one
You hear the cry of every soul
You see all the wrong that’s done
You are the answer from of old

Remember us, remember us
In the flame, in the flood
Lead us on, lead us on
But carry us, carry us
We might be burned
We might fall down
But we won’t drown

We might wander out too far
Where wilder seas will capsize us
Or get lost and break your heart
Good Shepherd break us as you must
